Asteroid occultation. Tonight the faint asteroid 234 Barbara occults a 7.5-magnitude star west of Procyon as seen from parts of central Florida, the southern UK, northern Germany, and Russia. Jupiter's Great Red Spot should cross Jupiter's central meridian around 6:14 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. The "red" spot is pale orange-tan, so a light blue or green filter helps improve its contrast. The Red Spot transits about every 9 hours 56 minutes; for all of the Red Spot's central-meridian crossing times, good worldwide, use our Red Spot calculator or our list for the rest of 2009.

Starting a little later, Jupiter's biggest moon, Ganymede, casts its tiny black shadow onto Jupiter's face: from 7:03 to 10:37 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. . . .

Ring Nebula: Death of a sun-like star

Ring Nebula: A familiar sight to sky enthusiasts with even a small telescope, the Ring Nebula (M57) is some 2,000 light-years away in the musical constellation Lyra. The central ring is about one light-year across, but this remarkably deep exposure - a collaborative effort combining data from three different telescopes - explores the looping filaments of glowing gas extending much farther from the nebula's central star. Of course, in this well-studied example of a planetary nebula, the glowing material does not come from planets. Instead, the gaseous shroud represents outer layers expelled from a dying, sun-like star.

This remarkable composite image includes narrowband image data recording the Ring's atomic hydrogen emission (shown as violet) in visible light and molecular hydrogen emission (shown as red) at near infrared wavelengths. The much more distant spiral galaxy IC 1296 is also visible at the upper right.

The following is the unedited statement they made to MUFON.

OH, August 7, 2009 - Triangular UFO flying low and silently over Northwest Ohio countryside. MUFON Case # 18524.

I live in the country side of Toledo, Ohio and my friends and I were on our way home for the night at 1:15 am on August 7, 2009.

We were driving East on St. Route 579 and we were actually talking about UFOs and aliens. We saw some bright lights in the sky off in the distance straight ahead of us. We didn't think too much of it but we kept an eye on it since we were already watching the skies.

We began to notice this object was coming straight at us, and it was very large. There were two visible white lights to the left and right sides of the craft, and one light in the middle and higher up, making a triangle.

It was flying very low to the ground, we are guessing 500-700 feet in the air. We turned left onto Reiman Road and the craft was still coming straight at us since the road curved back to the same direction we were heading.

I stopped the car and opened up my sunroof while my friends Michael and Aaron stuck their heads out the window to get a better look. The craft was very large and was triangular shaped and was moving at a steady course at approximately 75 mph. It was completely silent. It flew directly over us.

We tried to get it on camera or video with our phones but we were in complete awe. We couldn't take our eyes off it to even handle our phones. It looked similar to a stealth bomber at first, but it was much larger and flying way too low and silently and slow to be one of those because I've seen those before and trust me this was nothing from this world.
