Chinese intelligence controls Burma's military government

Burma’s military junta is a key strategic ally of Beijing, which is using the Chinese military to influence and control the junta through its three top officers, Gens. Than Shwe, Maung Aye and Thura Shwe Mann. Shwe is chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, as the junta is known, and Aye is vice chairman. China’s backing for the junta has been crucial to its survival, according to U.S. officials. China regards Burma as a future source of vital oil and gas and Chinese companies currently are exploring regions of Burma for deposits.
