U.S. officials said the Chinese military’s extreme secrecy was on display when Beijing confronted the United States in a dispute last month over its refusal to permit U.S. warships from making port calls in Hong Kong.
The first problem took place Nov. 22 as the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk and its eight warships approached Hong Kong and were informed by a Foreign Ministry official that the visit had been “disapproved.”

President Hu, considered a fervent follower of orthodox values in the Soviet -- and Russian -- system, has paid particular attention to the intriguing ways and means through which his good friend Vladimir Putin has managed to stay in power. A just-released Government White Paper on China’s political parties noted that Beijing would boost the role of eight so-called “democratic parties.” |
