Contrary to the expectations of party cadres in Beijing, Vice-President Xi Jinping failed to get into the policy-setting Central Military Commission (CMC) at the just-concluded Fourth Plenary Session of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee. Party insiders say, however, that this does not indicate that Xi's heir-apparent status has been affected. Xi, 56, the highest-ranked member of the "Fifth-Generation leadership" within the supreme Politburo Standing Committee, is still favored to succeed supremo Hu Jintao as CCP General Secretary at the 18th Party Congress in October 2012.
