Former White House adviser warns China moves adding up to 'peril' for U.S.

The National Security adviser during the last Bush administration, said U.S.-China relations face "peril" if Beijing emerges as a hostile world military power. “Americans feel that we have made the major commercial and diplomatic sacrifices to pressure Iran and North Korea to forego nuclear weapons programs that threaten both Chinese and U.S. interests — while China is actually expanding its commercial and economic ties with both countries,” he said. 'Man-made disasters' blamed for drought in southwest China and along the Mekong

Outspoken Chinese environmentalists have blamed the worst-in-a-century drought hitting China's southwestern provinces on "man-made disasters," not freak weather patterns as claimed by central authorities. Dry conditions in the highlands of Yunnan Province, the source of the once-mighty Mekong River, have also threatened the water supply for 65 million people living in downstream countries including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
